Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30

This sunscreen lotion formulation was designed to provide broad spectrum (SPF/PFA ≤3) label SPF 30 performance.  HallBrite® ISO provides very rapid and efficient excited state quenching of Avobenzone, protecting it from photodegradation and so improves sunscreen performance.  HallBrite® BHB aids UV filter solubility and enhances product feel.  This formulation was subjected to in vitro analysis and delivered SPF ~ 33, PFA (PPD) ~ 10 performance with critical wavelength 378 nm.

PREPARATIVE PROCEDURE

1In a secondary vessel combine phase A and mix well. Dissolve phase B in phase A with mixing and heat phase AB to 80°C.
2Add phase C to phase AB with mixing until homogeneous.
3In the main vessel, add water of phase D and dissolve EDTA. When EDTA has dissolved, add Xanthan Gum and mix until fully incorporated.
4Heat main vessel to 80°C and add premix of phase E.
5When oil phase (ABC) and water phase (DE) are both homogeneous and at designated temperatures, slowly add oil phase to water phase with prop mixing. Then homogenize for 3 mins, resume prop mixing and start cooling.
6Add premixed phase F into phase ABCDE to bring pH to 7.5-8.0.
7When batch is below 50°C add phase G individually with mixing.
8When the batch is uniform, add deionized water to correct for evaporative losses and continue mixing until smooth.
